Understanding India’s Turmeric (Haldi) Exports

About India’s Turmeric Export Data

IndiaGraphs tracks India’s turmeric (haldi) exports through two measures: quantity exported in tonnes and export value in ₹ crore. Read together, they show whether changes in export earnings are accompanied by changes in the physical volume shipped overseas.

Turmeric is sold in different forms and grades. Export totals can reflect differences in product mix as well as changes in demand, so the headline quantity and value series should be interpreted as aggregate measures.

Export Value Is Not the Same as Export Volume

An increase in export value can occur even when tonnage is flat or falling. Higher realised prices, a shift toward higher-value grades, changes in the rupee exchange rate and differences in product composition can all contribute.

Conversely, stronger shipment volumes do not guarantee an equivalent rise in export earnings. This is why looking at the two charts separately can produce an incomplete account of the market.

What Can Value per Tonne Tell Us?

Dividing export value by export quantity produces an approximate unit value. When value is recorded in ₹ crore and quantity in tonnes, multiply the value figure by 10,000,000 before dividing by tonnes to obtain rupees per tonne.

Unit value is not a quoted farm-gate or wholesale price. It is an aggregate ratio influenced by product quality, processing, destination mix and reporting classifications. It should not be used as a direct proxy for prices received by turmeric farmers.

Why Turmeric Export Performance Changes

Crop availability, weather conditions, domestic consumption, international buyer demand, quality requirements and logistics costs can affect shipments. Changes in processing and the mix of whole, dried or powdered turmeric can also influence reported value.

A sharp annual change should therefore prompt a check of both quantity and value before drawing conclusions about competitiveness or overseas demand.

Using the Turmeric Export Series

Use the quantity dataset to study shipment trends and the value dataset to study export receipts. Comparing the two can identify periods in which volume and earnings diverged.

The chart does not, by itself, identify destination countries, shipment prices by grade or the share earned by farmers. Those questions require more detailed trade and domestic market data.
