About India's iron ore imports

The IndiaGraphs chart reports iron ore imports through two measures: Import Volume and Import Value. The first records the quantity entering India; the second records the monetary value of those imports. These measures can diverge when international prices, freight costs or the types of ore purchased change.

Why an iron ore producer may import

Domestic mineral production does not eliminate the possibility of imports. Steelmakers may require particular grades, specifications or locations of supply, and imported material may sometimes be commercially preferable. The import series alone cannot establish the reasons for individual procurement decisions.

Interpreting the implied unit value

Dividing import value by import volume can provide an average value per unit, provided the periods and units match. It is not necessarily a quoted global iron ore price. Grade, product mix, freight, insurance and the trade valuation convention can influence the result.

Imports, exports and domestic availability

A country can import and export the same commodity because buyers and sellers differ by region, quality and commercial needs. Gross import and export flows should not be interpreted as a complete measure of domestic consumption without production and inventory data.

Using the data responsibly

Check whether the underlying trade classification covers ore, concentrates or other related products. Align the reporting period and currency when comparing the two tabs. Changes in import value should not be attributed entirely to price unless volume and product composition have also been examined.
