Understanding India Iron Ore Exports (Volume & Value)

About India - Iron Ore Exports (Volume & Value)

IndiaGraphs tracks India’s iron ore exports through Export Volume and Export Value. These two measures make it possible to distinguish changes in shipments from changes in the money earned on those shipments.

Reading the two datasets

DatasetWhat it captures
Export VolumePhysical quantity traded
Export ValueMonetary value of the same trade category

What the iron ore export datasets show

IndiaGraphs provides two series for India's iron ore exports: Export Volume and Export Value. Volume measures the physical quantity shipped abroad; value records the monetary amount attributed to those exports. Reading both is necessary because higher export receipts do not always mean more ore was shipped.

Separating quantity from price and product mix

Export value can change because shipment volume changes, realised prices change or the composition of exported ore changes. Differences in grade, iron content, fines versus lumps and destination markets may affect unit values. Dividing value by volume gives an implied average unit value, not a universal market price.

Why domestic steel demand matters

Iron ore is an input for steelmaking. Changes in domestic steel production, mining output and availability can influence the amount available for export. Trade policy, freight costs and overseas demand also affect shipments, but the dataset alone does not identify a single cause.

Do not equate export value with profitability

Export receipts are not mining-sector profit. They do not deduct extraction costs, royalties, transport, processing or other expenses. Similarly, higher volumes do not automatically mean greater value added within India.

How to compare the series

Match the reporting period and product coverage before calculating average export value per tonne. Check the source's treatment of ore, concentrates and pellets; classifications may differ. Use the chart to identify periods worth investigating, then corroborate explanations with trade and industry records.
