Understanding India Steel Export & Import

About India’s Steel Export & Import

Steel trade is best understood as two flows rather than a single measure of international competitiveness. IndiaGraphs presents India's steel exports and imports so readers can compare outward shipments with steel purchased from overseas.

Datasets available on this page

IndiaGraphs provides 2 datasets: Steel Export, Steel Import. Use the dataset tabs above to examine each measure separately.

Exports, imports and the trade balance

Exports measure steel shipped from India to foreign markets; imports measure steel entering India from abroad. Subtracting imports from exports gives a net trade position only when both series use comparable units, product coverage and periods.

A country may be a major steel producer and still import particular grades or products that domestic mills do not supply competitively or in sufficient quantity.

Why the product mix matters

Flat products, long products and specialised steels serve different markets and can have different price and demand conditions. A change in total trade may reflect a shift in the types of steel traded, not merely a change in overall competitiveness.

Tariffs, trade-remedy measures, freight costs and overseas demand can influence shipment patterns. The two headline series alone cannot isolate the effect of any one policy.

Quantity is different from value

Before comparing the two tabs, check the unit shown on each chart. Trade measured by quantity describes physical movement; trade measured by value also reflects prices and exchange rates.

If both series are in quantity units, their difference indicates net physical trade for the stated coverage, not the monetary trade deficit or surplus.

How to use the series

Compare export and import movements over the same time interval and look for sustained changes rather than drawing conclusions from one observation. To explain an unusual movement, consult product-level trade statistics and market-price information.

The charts describe recorded trade; they do not directly measure domestic steel demand, production capacity or profitability.

Data interpretation and downloads

The chart and available downloads support historical comparison, provided the observations use consistent units, reporting periods and definitions. The dataset mapping identifies the measures but does not provide their underlying values; no numerical trend or record high is asserted here.
