Understanding India’s Chilli (Lal Mirch) Exports

About India’s Chilli Export Data

IndiaGraphs tracks India’s chilli (lal mirch) exports using two indicators: export value in ₹ crore and export quantity in tonnes. The value series measures export receipts in rupee terms; the quantity series measures the volume shipped.

These indicators need not move together. Export earnings can change because of prices or the mix of products sold, not only because more or less chilli was exported.

The Difference Between Volume Growth and Value Growth

Suppose export quantity rises while total value remains broadly unchanged. That would imply a lower average export value per tonne, all else equal. If value rises faster than tonnage, the opposite is true.

This relationship is useful for interpretation but is not sufficient to identify its cause. Chilli varieties, quality grades, processing and destination markets can change the composition of exports.

An Indicative Value-per-Tonne Measure

A simple ratio can help compare the two series: export value in ₹ crore multiplied by 10,000,000, divided by export quantity in tonnes. The result is an aggregate rupee value per tonne.

It is not a domestic mandi price or a standardised international quotation. Comparing this ratio over time is most meaningful when product definitions and reporting coverage remain consistent.

What Can Shift Chilli Exports?

Weather and harvest conditions affect domestic availability. Overseas demand, food-safety and residue requirements, buyer specifications, competing suppliers and transport costs can influence shipments and export earnings.

Because the crop is marketed in different forms, a change in aggregate value may reflect changes in what India exported as well as changes in how much it exported.

Using the Historical Chilli Export Data

Use the quantity dataset to identify changes in shipment volume and the value dataset to assess export receipts. Review both before describing a year as exceptionally strong or weak for the export sector.

The chart does not reveal destination-level demand, export margins or prices received by growers. Those conclusions require additional evidence beyond aggregate trade totals.
