Understanding India’s Large Cardamom (Badi Elaichi) Exports

About India’s Large Cardamom Export Data

IndiaGraphs tracks exports of large cardamom (badi elaichi) through quantity in tonnes and value in ₹ crore. These two series describe different aspects of trade: the physical scale of exports and the rupee earnings associated with those shipments.

Large cardamom is distinct from small cardamom in its product characteristics and trade market. The two should not be combined simply because both are called cardamom.

Reading Value and Quantity Together

Export value can rise without an increase in tonnes shipped when the average realised value per tonne increases. The reverse is also possible: shipments can expand while earnings grow more slowly if average unit values fall.

The divergence is analytically useful because it points to changes in prices or product composition that are not apparent from either series alone.

What Does Export Value per Tonne Mean?

An indicative average can be obtained by dividing export value by export quantity. To convert the dataset units, multiply ₹ crore by 10,000,000 and divide by tonnes to calculate rupees per tonne.

This ratio is not a uniform quoted price for large cardamom. Quality, drying and processing, shipment sizes and destination mix can affect aggregate unit values.

Why Large Cardamom Exports Fluctuate

Cultivation conditions, harvest volumes, domestic consumption, overseas demand, quality requirements and transport costs can influence trade. When supplies are constrained, higher unit values may offset some decline in shipment volumes; this should be tested against the data rather than assumed.

Exchange-rate changes can also affect rupee-denominated export values, particularly when sales are priced in foreign currency.

Comparing Large and Small Cardamom

Large and small cardamom have separate export datasets because they are different products with different market dynamics. Comparing the direction of their value and volume changes can be informative, but comparing average prices without accounting for product differences is misleading.

For a parallel view, see India’s small cardamom exports.

Using the Large Cardamom Dataset

Use the quantity series to track the volume of exports and the value series to examine earnings. Read them jointly before making claims about export strength.

The aggregate figures do not establish destination-level demand, growers’ income or price changes for a particular grade.
