Understanding India’s Cumin (Jeera) Exports

About India’s Cumin Export Data

IndiaGraphs presents India’s cumin (jeera) exports in two forms: quantity in tonnes and value in ₹ crore. The combination allows a more careful reading of export performance than either measure alone.

Cumin is an agricultural commodity whose trade value can be sensitive to changes in crop availability and prices. An increase in the rupee value of exports is not, on its own, proof that India shipped more cumin.

Why Quantity and Value May Diverge

A smaller harvest can restrict exportable supplies while also contributing to higher prices. In such a period, export volume might decline even as the total export value holds up or rises. Conversely, plentiful supply can support shipments without an equal increase in export earnings.

These are possible mechanisms, not claims about any specific year in the dataset. The chart should be used to identify when the divergence occurred before investigating its cause.

Calculating an Approximate Unit Value

For each comparable period, divide export value by export quantity to estimate average export value per tonne. With value in ₹ crore and quantity in tonnes, the calculation is value × 10,000,000 ÷ quantity.

The resulting number is an aggregate trade unit value. It should not be presented as the price paid to cumin growers or the spot price for a particular grade. Changes in destination and quality mix can affect the calculation.

Factors Behind Cumin Export Movements

Production conditions in growing regions, domestic demand, inventories, overseas buyer requirements, international competition and currency movements may influence exports. The balance between local supply and export demand can be especially important in interpreting year-to-year changes.

Value data are reported in rupees, so exchange-rate movements can also affect comparisons across periods even when overseas prices change differently.

Using the Cumin Export Series

Use the quantity chart to examine shipment trends and the value chart to examine export earnings. Where the two move differently, investigate prices and product mix rather than assuming a change in demand alone.

These datasets are aggregate measures; they do not show country-wise destinations, transaction prices or the profitability of individual exporters.
