Understanding India Silver Production (Volume & Value)

About India’s Silver Production

This dataset reports silver production in India by volume and value. It is a domestic production indicator and should not be confused with silver imports, retail silver sales or the amount of silver held by investors.

  • Production Volume
  • Production Value

Why Silver Production Depends on Other Metals

Silver is often recovered as a by-product of mining and processing other metals, including lead and zinc. Output can therefore respond to changes in the operation of those mines and refineries, not only to movements in silver prices. A rise in the market price does not automatically produce a proportional rise in domestic output.

Interpreting Volume and Value Together

The volume series shows physical production; the value series captures reported monetary value. Value may rise when silver prices increase even if production volume does not. Conversely, higher physical output can coincide with weaker reported value when prices or product mix change.

Domestic Output and India’s Silver Market

Domestic production is only one source of silver available in India. Imports, recycled metal and inventory changes can also contribute to supply. Production figures therefore cannot be used alone to estimate jewellery demand, industrial consumption or investment purchases.

Using the Dataset

Compare both series to assess whether changes in production value accompany changes in physical output. When researching the broader silver market, examine imports, international prices and industrial demand separately. The reported value is not a measure of producers’ profits.
