The IndiaGraphs gold reserves page has five datasets: Total Gold, Domestic Holdings, Overseas - BoE/BIS Custody, Gold Deposits and Gold Share in Forex Reserves. Together they illuminate quantity, custody and reserve composition—but not every figure is directly comparable.

What the five datasets represent

Understanding India's official gold holdings

India's gold reserves form part of the Reserve Bank of India's reserve assets. The IndiaGraphs chart separates total gold, domestic holdings, gold held in overseas custody, gold deposits and gold's share in foreign exchange reserves. These are related measures, but not all use the same unit or represent additive categories.

Where the gold is held

Domestic Holdings refers to gold held within India under the reported classification. Overseas - BoE/BIS Custody identifies gold kept in custody with the Bank of England or the Bank for International Settlements, as reported. Location is a custody distinction: gold held overseas is not necessarily gold owned by a foreign institution.

Gold deposits are a separate classification

The Gold Deposits series should be interpreted according to the RBI's reporting definition. It is not safe to add total gold, domestic holdings, overseas custody and deposits together: total gold may already encompass the component categories. Check the reporting notes before reconciling component totals.

Tonnes and value tell different stories

Changes in the physical quantity of gold can reflect acquisitions or other movements. Changes in the value of gold reserves can also reflect international gold prices and currency valuation. A higher reserve valuation does not, by itself, prove that the RBI bought more gold.

What the gold share measures

Gold Share in Forex Reserves is a percentage of the overall reserves valuation, not a measure of tonnes. Its movement depends on both the value of gold and the value of other reserve assets. The share can rise even if physical gold holdings remain unchanged.

Using the five datasets

Start with Total Gold to understand the reported stock, then examine custody and deposit classifications for composition. Use the share series for portfolio context, not physical quantity comparisons. Align observation dates and units before comparing with the foreign exchange reserves dataset.
