What the sales figure represents

Sales record vehicles within the dataset's defined category and reporting period. They should not automatically be equated with the number of CNG vehicles currently on Indian roads.

Fleet size depends on earlier sales, scrappage and the continued use of existing vehicles. Sales also need to be distinguished from registrations if the source uses different reporting events.

Why CNG adoption varies

CNG vehicle demand is shaped by fuel-price differences, model availability, operating costs, city-gas infrastructure and the needs of commercial or private users.

Growth in one period cannot establish that CNG is becoming more competitive everywhere: local pump prices and station access differ across markets.

Comparing CNG with other powertrains

CNG, petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles have different fuel and infrastructure requirements. A shift in CNG sales share may reflect changes in the overall vehicle market as well as changes in demand for CNG itself.
