Understanding India’s Small Cardamom (Elaichi) Production & Area

About India’s Small Cardamom (Elaichi) Production & Area

IndiaGraphs presents historical production and cultivated-area datasets for this crop. Read together, the series help separate changes in the scale of cultivation from changes in output per unit of land.

Small cardamom is a high-value spice grown under specific agro-climatic conditions. Its production depends on the health and age of plantations, rainfall patterns and crop management, not merely the reported cultivated area.

What the two datasets measure

DatasetInterpretation
Production of Small CardamomReported crop output
Area under Small CardamomLand area associated with cultivation

These measures answer different questions. Their relationship is often more informative than either series considered in isolation.

Small cardamom production: a perennial-crop perspective

For a perennial crop, expansion in area and expansion in output need not occur simultaneously. New plantings require time to become productive, while established plantations can experience substantial year-to-year yield variation.

Small cardamom should not be confused with large cardamom. They are different crops with distinct production regions and market characteristics. Comparisons should use like-for-like crop definitions.

How to interpret changes in the chart

Production can increase because more land is cultivated, because yields improve, or both. Likewise, a decline in output is not automatically evidence that farmers reduced acreage. Comparing the two lines helps identify which explanation is plausible, but weather and agronomic evidence are needed to establish causes.

Can production and area be used to estimate yield?

When production and area are reported for the same crop, geography and period, production divided by cultivated area gives an indicative yield per hectare. First confirm the units: metric tonnes divided by hectares gives tonnes per hectare. If the dataset uses another unit or an area definition that differs from harvested area, convert or qualify the calculation before comparing yields.

Using the historical data

Use the dataset tabs above to switch between the two measures, compare changes across matching periods and access the available downloads. For comparisons, keep the time period, units and underlying statistical definitions consistent.

Area figures may refer to planted, cultivated or harvested area depending on the source. Production estimates can also be revised. Check the dataset notes before calculating yield or comparing with figures from another agency.
