Understanding India’s Large Cardamom (Badi Elaichi) Production & Area

What the Large Cardamom Data Measures

Large cardamom (badi elaichi) is a distinct spice crop from small or green cardamom. This page brings together two Indian agricultural series: production of large cardamom and the area under its cultivation. Read them together: output can change because more land is planted, because harvests per hectare improve, or because both move at once.

Large cardamom is associated with the eastern Himalayan growing belt, where elevation, moisture and growing conditions shape cultivation. The production series describes harvested output; the area series describes land under the crop. Neither dataset, on its own, reports farm-gate prices, exports or farmers' earnings.

Production, Area and Implied Yield

Dividing production by area gives an implied yield per hectare, provided both series cover the same geography, period and crop definition. This derived measure helps separate expansion in cultivated area from changes in productivity.

A smaller harvest despite stable area can reflect weather, disease pressure, crop age or other disruptions; it should not automatically be read as a permanent decline in productive capacity. Conversely, a larger harvest following an increase in area does not necessarily indicate better yields.

Why Large Cardamom Is Not Small Cardamom

Large and small cardamom differ in plant characteristics, growing regions, uses and commercial markets. Combining their output into one undifferentiated 'cardamom' series would conceal those differences. Compare the two crops as separate indicators rather than treating a tonne of each as economically interchangeable.

For the companion crop, see India's small cardamom production and area.

How to Read the Historical Chart

Switch between the production and cultivation-area tabs and compare the direction and timing of changes. When evaluating a sharp movement, check whether the observation is an estimate or a final figure in the underlying agricultural release.

The chart does not establish causation. Crop output is shaped by rainfall, planting decisions, disease, harvest conditions and reporting practices; interpreting any single year requires additional evidence.
