India Designates Three Major Ports as Green Hydrogen Hubs to Drive Clean Energy Transition
As per PIB’s 10 OCT 2025 release, the Government of India has recognised Deendayal, V.O. Chidambaranar and Paradip ports as Green Hydrogen Hubs under the National Green Hydrogen Mission – a move to fast-track port-led hydrogen production, storage and export opportunities.
Key Highlights
- 3 ports (Deendayal, V.O. Chidambaranar, Paradip) formally recognised as Green Hydrogen Hubs to create clustered hydrogen value-chains at strategic coastal nodes. Press Information Bureau
- Recognition follows revised HVIC & Green Hydrogen Hub guidelines (27 Jun 2025) and is primarily a status designation enabling access to Central/State incentives without direct MNRE funding under Component B2. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy+1
- Designation is expected to attract green investments, industrial participation and export-oriented projects, leveraging ports’ connectivity on eastern & western trade routes as emphasized by MoPSW. Press Information Bureau
- Ports already running pilots/early green projects (e.g., Deendayal/Kandla 1MW Make-in-India electrolyser; VOC pilot projects) demonstrate readiness for scale-up and integration with renewables.
| Port Name | State | Recognition Type | Readiness Factors | Readiness Score (0–10) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deendayal Port Authority | Gujarat | Green Hydrogen Hub (NGHM) | Strong renewable linkage, pilot electrolyser plant, export potential | 9 |
| V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority | Tamil Nadu | Green Hydrogen Hub (NGHM) | Ongoing pilot projects, logistics integration, industrial partnerships | 8 |
| Paradip Port Authority | Odisha | Green Hydrogen Hub (NGHM) | Large coastal zone, upcoming green ammonia projects, renewable tie-ups | 7 |
This is a strategic, low-cost policy step that transforms ports into hydrogen clusters: it reduces early project risk by bundling infrastructure, signals investor confidence, and strengthens India’s export positioning for green hydrogen and derivatives – all aligned to the NGHM’s objective of building a competitive hydrogen economy.
